How to edit the wiki

Creating an account

If you don't have an account, go to the login page, you will find a buton at the top right of the screen that says login, and enter the email address you provided in class and create a passwork. The system is touchy sometimes and you may have to play around a bit in order to create an account. For example, it expects you just to enter a password when you have not yet created one, just try to log in and then it will say something about how this account has already been registered. Hit the 'forgot password' buton and it will let you 'create a new password' even though you haven't created one yet. Go through that and then click create account button and you all should be able to create an account with your desired password since I have entered all class members' emails as editors.

Editing pages

To edit, login to your account. Next,  simply click the edit tab located on the top of the page next to the 'view' tab. After this, an editable screen resembling a word processor will appear. You can enter any information on that page. Make sure to save the changes when you are finished, the save button is located at the bottom left corner of the editing screen.

Creating new pages

To create a new page, you must first make a link for that page. While editing a given page, write what you want the page to be named, then highlight the text and click  'Insert a link to a new page' under the 'Insert links' section on the right hand side of the page. It will then prompt you to specify what kind of page you would like it to be.

To like to outside pages, click on the URL option under 'link type' then copy and paste the address you would like the link to go to in the editable region.

To create new internal pages, click on the 'new wiki page' under the 'link type' option. Then, verify the page name. Next, save your changes. This will take you to the page you just edited. Click the new link, it will ask you if you would like to use a template. Click 'no template' unless you would like to experiment with some of the available templates.

Remember to include a link to the page you have created on some relevant page so that people can get to your page. For example if you have found a new reference, or would like to create a new page with a different theme of references, go to class readings, edit, then put the theme, highlight it, then click insert link to a new page and find the page you have created in the drop down menu of pbwiki pages. Select it, and the link will take you to the page. Otherwise, your page may get lost in the shuffle.

Uploading Images

To upload an image, find the 'upload/view files' tab at the top right portion of the screen. Once there, it will ask you to enter the source of the image. Find the image in your hard drive directory. Once the file is uploaded, it will appear on the list below. To access these files while editing a page, look under the 'insert links' section on the right hand side of the page and click on 'Images and files' this will show all the files that have been uploaded. Click on the desired image to insert it on a page.

Exporting Stemma Files

To place a stemmatic picture on the site, you must first export that file from the stemma program. First, make sure the file is saved with the save as feature, to avoid confusion label it with most of the sentence. Next, find the Export function located in the file tab in the current stemma software. Save the picture with the same sentence and a "j"  to signify that this file is a jpeg, a readable format with pbwiki. I try to save the sentences with most of the words intact, or label it with the major parts of the sentence. This helps later when retrieving files because a lot of  files seem to accumulate fast when dealing with this process. It will also help keeping the website directory organized. When this is finished, refer to image uploading section above. If you want other people to be able to call your stemma up, bring it back to life so to speak, then read on to linearization.

Using Linearization Window to Edit Stemmas

Other people cannot save the stemma picture and edit that with the current stemma program. Matt is working on some kind of method to achieve something along these lines, but it is yet to come. We have been using an alternative method to send stemmatic phrases in character form, readable by another stemma program if copied and pasted to the linearization window. The linearization window is located under the 'window' tab on the stemma program. Copy the text and past it under or above the example picture.

Using Headings

Headings are useful for pages with a lot of information because they can be used to create a table of contents that will direct the user to the appropriate place on the page. Headings correspond to how the information will be organized in the table of contents. Heading 1 will be the most prominent, while the other headings will be subordinate to the main heading 1 closest to it.

To create a table, go to 'Insert Plugin' on the tool bar at the top of the page. Once there, go to 'PBwiki Magic' and select table of contents. I am not quite sure what the depth of the table means, but I don't think it matters that much, any of them seem to work.
